  • Myrtle Curry: Couch to 5K

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard and is it what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

I signed up for the couch 2-5k program. Not at all. I was very intimidated by horror stories from people that would talk about it. How severe the workouts were, how it made you throw up, and how people were getting injured. This is so far from the truth. The coaches explain every movement, what to do if it doesn’t feel comfortable to you. I have never been involved with anything that has such a great support system. Every single person you come in contact with gives you amazing energy and encouragement.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

The 1st was just completing the 5k. After that it’s now a daily thing. I come in here 3 days a week and I leave with the feeling that I did it! I amaze myself of what I can do every time I come in here. It’s not pretty by any means, but I did it!

What goal are you working on next?

To try harder, sweat more, and bitch less – and stop talking to myself lol!

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

Coach Boz telling me that if he has faith in me, so should I!! Simple words that gives me motivation every day.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

I tell everyone that if I can do this, anyone can. I am proof that anyone can do this. Just try 1 class – 1 hour class, how can you walk away not wanting to come back!?!?!

  • JAVIER CISNEROS – STRAIGHT BACK TO DIEHARD

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

Since I arrived from Ecuador, I was looking for a place to do CrossFit. Diehard was the first place I tried, I liked it a lot, but I wanted to have some perspective on how were the rest of the places. After trying some other places I went straight back to Diehard. The technique classes for beginners was what caught me. As a former swimmer, I know that technique not only makes you improve faster, but also helps avoid injuries. I am happy having walked into CrossFit Diehard!

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

Yes, it was! I thought that it was fun, working out together with a group of people, challenging your self to improve each day. I was introduced to CrossFit by one of my friends back in Ecuador. He recommended me to try it out, and I am so glad that I did. The feeling that I had the first day I started doing CrossFit until today hasn’t changed at all. It is a mix of excitement, determination and a little bit of fear of not giving it all. One of the best times of each day, is when I am doing CrossFit.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

The same as most people I guess…Ring muscle-ups haha

In order to get it, I challenged myself to try to do a muscle-up 3 times after each WOD. At the beginning it was terrible, the most I could do was pull ups. After a some weeks of trying I was able to get my first ring muscle-up.

What goal are you working on next?

    Strict muscle-up and pistols.

For the strict muscle-ups, I will try to apply the same thing that I did for the Ring muscle-up. And for the pistols, ehm…I will keep working on my legs until they become strong enough.

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

My favorite memory was my first “Murph”, on memorial day. I think I was the last one on finishing from my heat, and everyone was pushing me to finish. It felt like a team, and after it, sharing a meal and a beer with everyone was something that made me feel like I was back home.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

    Do it!

Do it safely, but do it!

Do not fear it, you choose how hard you want to hit it.

Listen to your coach carefully, apply the technique, and give all you have got!

  • TIM AND JEANNE WRIGHT: POWER COUPLE

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

Tim has always worked out in some form or another his entire life. A friend from work talked about Diehard all the time and she looks incredible so I thought I would give it a try. In the past I tried kickboxing, Zumba, and Body Pump but never really found anything that kept my interest for any period of time. After a few sessions I invited Tim to workout at Diehard and now you can see us there together 4-5 times a week.

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

I feel so accomplished after a workout with a better time or more weight. I trust the Coaches to help me with my form and push me when I need it. Together we get amazing results. ~Jeanne

Crossfit is so much more challenging than what I thought it would be. It is never not hard but it is always rewarding. ~Tim

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

I am so proud of the lifestyle Diehard helps promote for my family. Tim and I are regulars for the 5:30am class 3 days a week and then some. Working out together has strengthened our marriage as we try to encourage one another and maybe even try to see who can do more rounds. Our children see our excitement and physical progress. Our son, Carson is so excited to participate in Diehard classes as well. ~Jeanne

I am really happy with the progression of my back squats and front squats. I feel my form has improved along with the amount of weight I am able to lift. I have trained in some form or another most of my life but what I really enjoy about my time at Diehard is seeing the excitement Jeanne gets from shaving a few seconds off her mile or hitting a new record on a lift. ~Tim

What goal are you working on next?

I have worked on pullups and can see progress so a dead hang pull up is the goal right now. ~Jeanne

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

Our favorite memory is Memorial Day Murph. Both of our fathers and Tim’s grandfather, a disabled WWII veteran, have served our country and Diehard did an amazing job of celebrating our Armed Forces while helping to reflect on their sacrifice. I thought a mile, 100 pull-ups, 200 pushups, 300 squats, and another mile were so overwhelming. The encouragement of the members and Coaches helped keep me focused and I did it! I could not believe it. I will have to say I did think of Lt. Murphy during the workout and all he endured while I completed the Hero WOD in his honor.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

Welcome to the suck, if you are looking for the globo gym perspective you will be disappointed. CrossFit is some of the hardest training you will ever do but it also some of the most rewarding. Usually after the pain, come the smiles. You will find like-minded individuals to help motivate and grow. If you are looking to make a difference or build a foundation CrossFit Diehard is the place to visit.

  • GIOVANI GONZALEZ – LEARNING TO FLY!

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

I was introduced to Diehard and CrossFit by a good friend. I told her that I was tired of working out at a regular gym and that I had a goal of one day competing in an “Ironman” type of competition. She said I should check out CrossFit because it would definitely help me with my fitness goals. She said that of all the CrossFit gyms in the area, Diehard was the best, so one day I stepped in and never looked back.

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

CrossFit is nothing like I thought. It’s a thousand times better. I never thought I would fall in love with an activity like I have with CrossFit. The amount of encouragement you get here is priceless. I’ve never had people encouraging me while working out at a regular gym. Here we try to push each other to get better, to improve, to hit new personal records. I can only describe it with one word, “love.”

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

My proudest moment would have to be when I finally got my first ring muscle up. I would always watch the guys that had been there longer than me and how they could get up on those rings and just fly. They would string a bunch of muscle ups together. I wanted to feel like I was flying too. Getting a muscle up is almost like a right of passage. It’s a very athletic movement that requires strength and some skill. Well I worked and worked and at the ripe age of 34, I finally got that first ring muscle up! I don’t think I look like I’m flying just yet but I can string together a few now and it feels great!

What goal are you working on next?

My next goal is pretty simple. Get stronger. I will clean and jerk 300 lbs and snatch 225 lbs one day. I want to keep moving forward. I want to get as they say, “bigger, stronger, faster.” It’s only a matter of time, effort and hard work.

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

My favorite memory is day one at Crossfit Diehard. I was nervous and anxious. I didn’t know anyone there and I didn’t know what was going on. It was the first time in my life I had attempted the snatch movement. It was the most awkward exercise movement I had ever done. It was bad. The class was all girls and me. It was time for the WOD to begin And I was like, “I got this, no problem!” I was wrong. I wanted to throw up and I couldn’t finish all the required reps. The girls did finish and looked fresh after about 3 mins. I was on the floor rolling around from the pain in my arms and lungs for 10 mins. I was hooked!

If you love to be around cool people, A positive environment, challenge your body and mind, do it. And if you don’t, do it anyways. We’ll grow on you. One thing I’ve noticed about CrossFit Diehard is we all come from different backgrounds, cultures, countries, different everything. That’s what makes it great.

  • BETH OVERMYER: GLAD SHE DIDN’T WALK OUT

What or who brought you to CrossFit Diehard, and is CrossFit what you thought it would be?

A co-worker invited a bunch of us from work to check it out. I had no idea what CrossFit was and had only casually heard the term. When I walked in and saw the 6:00pm class I almost walked out. I thought – there is no way that I can do this! Being with co-workers, I made the decision to stay. I now attend the 6:00pm class and have happily realized that I CAN do this!

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

Recently shaving off 14 minutes on my last Murph! Why? 14 minutes!!!!

What goal are you working on next?

Definitely weighted overhead squats. It took a long time using just an empty barbell to get the movement down. It is still difficult but I am making progress!

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

I just enjoy the overall camaraderie with my fellow CrossFitters. Diehard is such a fun, friendly group of people! It takes a lot for me to come out of my shell, but it has been easy around this group.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

No matter your age, gender, weight or skill level – you can do this. It may take baby steps in the beginning (and a lot of sore muscles), but you will see rapid progress. This is the first time in my life that I have seen such results and have stuck with a program. The varied classes are never boring. The movements are also generally quick so your brain doesn’t have a lot of chance to quit. Having recently turned 40, I have to say that this is the best shape that I have been in since I was in my early 20’s as a college athlete. CrossFit has brought back that competitive spirit and while I may not be a competitor, I feel great about my progress. CrossFit has completely changed my life!

  • TIM SCHWAB: THANK GOD FOR THAT BRAHMA BULL

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

After years of training at Globo gyms, I was looking for something different and a little bit more intense. The gym I was training at, at the time, started offering CrossFit type workouts. I tried one and I was instantly hooked! My friend and I decided immediately that we needed to find a real affiliate and give it a shot. We looked at all three boxes in town and decided that Diehard was the place to be. Thank god for that Brahma Bull on the wall!

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

CrossFit is definitely harder than I anticipated. No matter how good you are at certain movements, there are always weaknesses to work on. Bigger, stronger, faster, doesn’t come easy.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

My proudest accomplishment is being able to do the WOD “King Kong”. I remember when I first started CrossFit, I heard Boz talking about it so I looked it up online. When I saw it, I just started laughing because it seemed impossible at the time. The weight was out of my league and I didn’t have muscle ups. Two and a half years later, on my 35th birthday, I finished in just over 5 minutes. I was happy as hell!

What goal are you working on next?

I always have short term goals when it comes to lifting numbers, to keep me focused and motivated. My gymnastics aren’t the best, so I am constantly trying to get better in that department.

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

I love Fridays at the box (gangster Fridays at 6pm)! Shout out to Ortiz! The work week is over, and everyone is in a good mood, except for Kat. It really is the community in CrossFit that makes it work. We have a great group of people at Diehard!

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

Definitely give it a shot. You are either going to love it or hate it after the first WOD. The results will come, but you are going to have to work your ass off to get them. It’s a grind for sure. If it was easy, everyone would do it!

  • JULIA PFUND: SWIMMING HER WAY INTO CROSSFIT

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

My friend introduced me to the idea of CrossFit when I first moved down here. I swam competitively for 14 years, so I was used to a structured type of workout style, which CrossFit has to offer. I thought I would try CrossFit one day and I fell in love the day I started. The people at CrossFit instantly felt like my family away from home.

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

Honestly I had no idea what CrossFit even was. I never pictured myself weightlifting though! And now 4 years later, I’m addicted and cannot get enough of it!

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

The day I finally got a pull-up without a band!!! I wanted to be able to do a pull-up since elementary school when we had to do those physical fitness tests in gym class. I was always so jealous that I could not do a pull-up. I’m pretty sure I annoyed Coach Boz everyday, begging for him to teach me to do a pull up, and with his awesome coaching, he made that happen for me!!!! So exciting. Building this upper body strength is not something I ever thought I could do.

What goal are you working on next?

I would love to be able to backsquat 200lbs and deadlift 300lbs. I like to make small goals for myself, that way I can accomplish them sooner and set the bar higher!

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

Choosing one favorite memory is really hard for me to do. The one that stands out to me the most is probably the first day Diehard opened. I still remember the WOD we did with the butcher push and pull-ups. Everyone was so excited that day. And it is really cool to see how the gym and the CrossFit family has grown. But the Christmas parties are also another favorite memory!! I love hanging out with my CrossFit family outside of working out.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

Do it, it will change your life forever! CrossFit will make you accomplish things you never thought your body was capable of doing.

  • MERRICK JOHNSON: NEW CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

I used to train a lot at school on my own flipping tires and doing push-ups. A friend of ours, Kellie Cofer, had always told me about CrossFit Diehard. She said that she loved it and every day was a different workout. She thought I would love it so I figured I’d give it a shot!

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

I wasn’t sure what it what to expect, so I guess I didn’t know what CrossFit was really about until I did it. Then once I did it, I loved it! CrossFit was what I had been looking for in my training regiment for years. I love the fact that every day is a new challenge.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

My greatest accomplishment at the gym is learning to do kipping pull-ups and being competitive in the CrossFit metcons.

What goal are you working on next?

My next goal is double unders, and unbroken toes-to-bar.

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

My favorite Diehard memory is doing “Murph” every year on Memorial Day. I enjoy the camaraderie and the great friendships that help push you to be the best that you can be everyday.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

Be careful, take it slow and easy at first. Don’t get in over your head and get hurt. Take your time, be consistent and challenge yourself everyday. As long as you train smart, you will progress very quickly, love it and reach the goals that you set!

  • ANDREEA CHIH: FROM SKEPTIC TO CONVERT

What brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

I was doing bootcamp and triathlons and was getting bored with my training, so I wanted to try something different (and this guy I was dating told me it was awesome)!

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

I kind of made fun of CrossFit and the olympic lifts and short metcons. I didn’t understand how a 10-12 minute workout (metcon) could tire me or get me in shape. After all, I was running long distances and spending hours on my training. I was so wrong. It’s definitely been the most difficult and challenging training I’ve ever done. It’s also the one that’s given me the best results as far as feeling physically fit and even mentally stronger.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

Just one, lol? I’m proud of the weight I can lift and the gymnastic skills I’ve learned that seemed impossible when I started.

What goal are you working on next?

    A Muscle Up, duh!

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

There really isn’t just one. It’s just the sense of community and the feeling that people celebrate your accomplishments with you as much as you do with them on theirs.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

It is for everyone and there is nothing that will get you in better shape or will challenge you more than CrossFit. I think some people are intimidated by it and don’t think it’s for them. When they come to Diehard, they see that it really is for everyone!

  • BILL POWERS: THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND

Bill, tell us a little bit about your journey to CrossFit Diehard

My journey to you started a year and a half ago, when visiting with Debbie and Dean Gatz. We were talking about general health issues and in that conversation Deb invited me to join her at CrossFit Diehard. My first workout was the “12 Days of Christmas” , which kicked my ass and layed me out for two days! I decided I DID enjoy it and in order to get myself out of the doldrums of lonely and BAD eating habits, I thought id stick it out and keep on working out! I’m so glad I did!

I’ve met a great group of like minded people with purpose!!! Good health, strength and beauty are among some of the things we all strive for and I’ve found that here, not to mention it brings structure and discipline to my life! I really feel as if I have benefited greatly by staying at CrossFit Diehard, as one of my goals was to become functionally strong for my line of work, which includes climbing and lifting odd objects. Many of the exercises help me throughout the day!

I really enjoy being a part of your clientele and if there is anything i can do to make Diehard a better place to be or help you in any way, I’ll be there in any way that I can! I appreciate all that you’ve done for me and look forward to CRUSHING my next WOD as best I can!!!

  • MOLLIE BATLEY: THE COMMUTER

What or who brought you to CrossFit Diehard?

An acquaintance opening a CrossFit gym brought me to CrossFit Diehard. I immediately connected with the people and the coaches and decided that convenience of a closer CrossFit gym wasn’t worth what I would lose leaving Diehard…so I happily drive 25+ miles 5 days a week to workout with my Diehard “Fam”.

Is CrossFit what you thought it would be (how so or how not)?

I didn’t know anything about CrossFit before I started, so I appreciated the attention the coaches paid to ensuring my safety. I was encouraged without being pushed to do more than I was capable.

What your proudest accomplishment in the gym and why?

I am very proud of the strength I have gained. As an older member I am always amazed that I am able to keep up with people half my age.

What goal are you working on next?

My goal is a simple one…to do a strict pull-up.

What is your favorite CrossFit Diehard memory?

I have so many great DH memories, but I am most thankful for the wonderful, lifelong friends I have made.

What would you say to someone looking to start CrossFit?

If I can do it… anyone can. I could not even do one sit-up when I started… I can do many sit-ups and much more, all thanks to CROSSFIT DIEHARD… 😊
